In an unprecedented achievement, Funke Akindele’s latest blockbuster, ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ has rewritten Nollywood history by becoming the first film to gross an astounding one billion Naira within a mere 21 days of its cinematic release.

The celebrated Nollywood actress and producer, Funke Akindele, took to Instagram to share the exciting news with her fans. The milestone was commemorated with a flashy One Billion Naira feat flyer, and Akindele expressed her gratitude to the audience, exclaiming, “Thank You LORD!!!, Thank NIGERIA!! Thank you GHANA!!”

Premiering on December 15, 2023, the film made an explosive entrance by grossing over N133 million in its opening weekend. Within the first 14 days, it surpassed N613 million, seizing the title of the highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2023. The momentum continued, reaching a staggering N854 million by January 2, solidifying its status as the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever.

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ surpasses the success of Akindele’s previous hits, including ‘Battle on Buka Street’ (N668.4 million) and ‘Omo Ghetto’ (N636.1 million), securing its place at the zenith of the Nigerian box office.

Directed by Adeoluwa Owu, popularly known as Captain Degzy, and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the star-studded movie features acclaimed actors such as Nse Ikpe Etim, Timini Egbuson, Ebelle Okaro, Uzor Arukwe, and more.

Akindele shared insights into the movie’s plot, revealing that it revolves around Jedidah Judah, a woman with five sons from five different men, each belonging to a different tribe. The story, close to Akindele’s heart and inspired by her late mother, sheds light on the struggles faced by single parents and mothers in society.

The cinematic triumph extends beyond Nigeria, as ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ is currently screening in cinemas in Ghana and the United Kingdom, expanding its reach and captivating audiences worldwide.
